The Power of Acknowledgement

Have you ever walked past a homeless person and looked the other way so you didn’t have to feel guilty about not giving anything? Or crossed to the other side of the street instinctively, without even thinking?
When walking past a homeless person, crossing the street or looking the other way is a stigmatized response whether we know it or not. Sometimes, you might be aware of it, but other times, you might not even realize your internal response. In that case, a simple change in mindset can make all the difference in the world.
At Living Outside, we aim to spread the gift of acknowledgment because we wholeheartedly believe it is one of the most powerful, and most neglected, forms of action in addressing homelessness. What many people fail to realize is that while people living outside may lack food, shelter, warmth, and/or safety, they're also often deprived of some of the most important human necessities: dignity and friendship.
Many of us think we have nothing to give, and we’d rather completely ignore someone than have to face them and feel bad, uncomfortable, or awkward. But in reality, every person, no matter what, does have something to give: a smile.
Simply acknowledging someone's presence can make an impact on someone's day, week, year, or maybe even life. If you have more than a second, maybe even stop for a quick conversation, or learn someone's name (and share yours!). Creating personal connections with people you see can destroy the silent barrier that exists between those living outside and those not.
Next time you find yourself in this situation, acknowledge homeless people’s personhood in whatever manner feels best for you. Try it out, and let us know how it goes.
